Greece has to be one of the MOST beautiful countries we have visited! It was a great birthday present for me - we flew to Athens on my birthday, and spent two days touring Athens. The view of Athens from the Acropolis was absolutely magnificent. After visiting the Parthenon and eating tons of Greek food in the restaurants located in the Plaka (the surrounding area of winding streets around the Acropolis) we traveled on high speed ferries to the islands of Santorini, Naxos, and Mykonos. We spent three days on each, traveling around each island on four wheelers. Everything was so bright with the signature white washed buildings and blue roofs. What an experience!
Naxos is the largest of the Greek Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. Upon arrival, you are welcomed by it's marble gate, known as Portara. The island is located south of Mykonos and has the higest mountain, Mount Zas, in the group of islands. We rode our four wheeler to the top of the mountain, stopping in villages along the way. Our favorite village was Filoti, very picturesque. Naxos also has very pretty, sandy beaches.
Mykonos, also part of the Greek Cyclades islands, is the most famous Greek island due to its beauty and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Mykonos Town, or Chora, is the capital and the most colorful, picturesque village on the island, displaying windmills on top of a hill and land marking the "Little Venice" area where the famous pelican of Mykonos resides.
Santorini is by far the most famous island of the Greek Cyclades, famous for its beautiful caldera. It is a small group of volcanic islands and was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world. What remains today is a submerged volcano and a caldera. There are gorgeous views from the villages of Fira, and Oia, perched on the cliffs.
A popular tradition for visitors is to sit on the cliffs in Oia, the most picturesque village on Santorini, in the evening and watch the sun set. The colors are spectacular.
The beaches in Santorini have different geographical features than the beaches on the other islands. Due to the volcanic eruptions, there are beaches with black sand and others with red sand caused by the volcanic pebbles left behind. Very unique.
